Le Var

The Var is part of the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region. It is bordering the departments of the Bouches-du-Rhône to the west, the Vaucluse (just a few hundred meters), the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence to the north, the Alpes-Maritimes to the east and Bathed by the Mediterranean Sea to the south.

The department of the Var is formed from the County of Provence and constitutes an area of 6 032 km2 with 420 km of littoral (islands included). It is divided into nine districts. It extended to the eponymous river, which was a frontier separating France from the County of Nice. But the addition of the Grasse borough to the Alpes-Maritimes in 1860 modified the administrative geography, which means that the Var river no longer flows in the department that bears its name, but only in those of the Alps -de-Haute-Provence and the Alpes-Maritimes! The department of Var is thus the only French department that gets its name from a geographical element that is not present on its territory.
